Utilities to push energy-savings programs to meet '20 goal

Would you volunteer to have your air conditioner shut off on one of the hottest days of the year?

Would you upgrade your air conditioner if you got a hefty rebate?

How about an energy audit of your home or business?

Those are some of the things Arizona electric customers will see pitched their way as Tucson Electric Power Co. and other state-regulated utilities try to meet tough new energy-efficiency standards approved recently by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

The commission in late July mandated that state-regulated utilities including TEP achieve energy savings totaling 22 percent by 2020 - among the highest such goals in the nation.

The standards, which are lower for electric cooperatives, will forestall the need to build new power plants, minimize rate increases and help protect the environment, Corporation Commission Chairman Kris Mayes said.

'The 'negawatt' ' - electricity you don't have to generate because of energy-efficiency gains - 'is the cheapest form of electricity,' Mayes said"
