Plastic Grocery Bag Ban Moves Ahead in California

Paper or plastic? It's a question uttered at supermarkets around the country, but if some California lawmakers have their way, the days of customers having a choice in stores will be gone.

Ron Fong of the California Grocers Association says "What we like about AB 1998 is that it will give a statewide fix to all grocery selling retailers which will give consistencies to both consumers and to businesses."

Assembly Bill 1998 would prohibit retailers from using plastic bags. If customers don't bring their own, they'd be given the option to buy a paper one for five cents.

"The goal in this legislation is that years down the road there will be more and more usage of reusable bags and not a use for paper bags," said Fong.
